Statement by Consulate-General of China in Sydney on Uncovering the Reality Behind the “Shen Yun” Performance
Date: 2026-01-02

Recently, the so-called “Shen Yun Performing Arts”, controlled by the “Falun Gong” cult, going around peddling tickets for its performance this March in Sydney. Some members of the Australian public were misled and mistakenly regarded it as a display of traditional Chinese culture and contacted the Consulate-General for verification. The Consulate-General of China in Sydney has the following statement:

“Falun Gong” is a notorious anti-humanity, anti-society and anti-science cult, which has been outlawed by the Chinese government in accordance with the law. The so-called “Shen Yun” is by no means a cultural or artistic performance. Rather, it is a political tool used by “Falun Gong” to exploit the Australian public’s appreciation of Chinese culture and respect for multiculturalism. Under the guise of “promoting traditional Chinese culture,” it disseminates anti-China narratives and cult ideology, seeks to expand its influence, and amass financial gains. This constitutes a distortion and desecration of Chinese culture, and represents deception, manipulation, and harm to audiences.

We would like to once again remind friends from all sectors to remain vigilant, exercise discernment, and stay away from the “Shen Yun” performance so as to avoid being misled or deceived.

In recent years, people-to-people and cultural exchanges between China and Australia have become extensive and increasingly close. Each year, dozens of outstanding cultural and artistic groups from across China visit Australia to present and promote authentic traditional Chinese culture that is warmly welcomed by the Australian people. With the Chinese New Year approaching, multiple cultural troupes from China will come to Sydney during this period to host a wide range of cultural activities, bringing high-quality Chinese cultural performances and experiences to the Australian people.

We look forward to working together with friends from all sectors to safeguard the sound momentum of bilateral relations between China and Australia and to further deepen the friendship between our two countries.
